Ham Radio

I’ve been a licensed Amateur Radio licensee since the late 1980’s and have enjoyed the hobby so much. It has kept my ass out of trouble and I ain’t kidding.

Since I reside in a tiny apartment I certainly can’t install a large base station antenna like would be done on your own home so I use a mobile type antenna which is used on cars and trucks as my pseudo base station antenna.

My interest in the hobby is very specific to the VHF and UHF frequency ranges. In the hobby, you can operate on the lower frequencies which allow you to talk with others all around the globe. Now days, we can do this with a phone! So, I have this little dual-band VHF/UHF radio, a power supply and an external speaker.

It’s just that simple to chat locally via Simplex (point-to-point) communications, or through a repeater station which greatly increases your communications range. Fun!

  1. How cool is that, one of those things I always wanted to do and never came to….that said, I operated radios when still flying planes….
