Injured Pigeon

On my way for a walk this morning, I came across this pigeon that just wasn’t flying away from me as they usually do. I was honestly two feet from this bird and it just set there looking up at me and making a sound that seemed to indicate it was very stressed. I’m sure it was. The bird stood up which is when I noticed it was keeping it’s weight off of it’s right leg and foot. I hope it learns to survive with it’s injury.

These photos are via the Nikon and the iPhone. After a bit, it flew about three feet but just barely. I decided to leave the bird in peace. Poor little thing. I know many people very much dislike the common pigeon, but it’s still sad to see any animal in this situation. I wonder just how the bird was injured?

  1. Poor guy. I hope he flew somewhere safe and comfortable.

  2. There are usually three main reasons for a bad or injured leg in a bird: it’s been in a fight with another bird; its leg has got tangled in something (grass or it’s been near a human dwelling, thread); or it has an infection or virus. It doesn’t look unhealthy enough for the latter (its eyes are bright and clear – rare if a bird is ill), it doesn’t look scruffy as it would if it’d been in a fight, so probably its leg was tangled in something.

I watch and feed wild birds every day here, and am ‘friends’ with many. 🙂
