As part of flood control in Las Vegas Valley these concrete dams and pilings help to slow the flow of water coming down from the surrounding mountains. There are also several very large Detention Basins around the valley as well. Flooding has been reduced in the valley now because of the Basins and mile upon mile of man-made concrete flood control ditches that channel the flood water into the Las Vegas Wash and Lake Las Vegas which is eventually dumped into Lake Mead. Flood control is important in the mountains!
They look huge!
They are several very large poured concrete blocks arranged such that they will slow down a large flow of water. The odd thing here is that directly behind me were homes in a subdivision!
Wow – craziness! Impressive though!
Actually, there’s a small ditch between the blocks and the road but still… I wouldn’t want that flood threat staring me down every day!
Me either!
