Burn Zone

A few years back lightning started a huge fire that burned I can’t remember how many acres and burned for about two weeks or something like that. These photos were taken near Lovell Canyon a couple years ago or so. I expect it will take many years for this area to recover.

Boulder City, Nevada

These photos are from about two years ago on one of my visits to beautiful Hoover Dam. No dam photos but I crossed the big bridge in Arizona and turned around. Digging deep into my archives, I meant to get back out there for more photos but not now. Photos via Nikon D3300.

The Threat

The weather has threatened rain all day but can’t bring forth rain in my area. Those dark clouds over the foothills look threatening but they are so far dry. 😎

Another Street View

This photo was taken on a different street in my neighborhood but still looking west. Those clouds are looking more and more ominous this afternoon! Yet no rain? I can always hear the rain beginning via my skylight over the dining room… Wait, I hear raindrops now! 😂🌴

A Quick Trip

I made a very quick trip the the Seven Eleven this morning, grabbed these admittedly redundant photos along my path. The streets weren’t completely deserted but certainly had much less traffic. The dark clouds are beautiful aren’t they? I hope you are safe and well!

Stormy Sunny Morning

Good morning from the valley. I walked to the end of the driveway to dump some recyclable items in the recycle bin and noticed this very attractive photo opportunity so in the house quickly for the Nikon! Above 6500 foot there are weather alerts for heavy snowfall in both the Spring Mountains and the Sheep Range. Down here all we get is rain but there hasn’t been too much rain overnight which is a good thing. My home is at 2800 feet above sea level. I hope it doesn’t rain hard here since I have minor flooding on the side of the house!

The peak is shrouded in the clouds

Sunny Fronds

I spent some time in the backyard today soaking up the wonderful 82 degree breeze and sunshine. My Latino neighbours behind me playing some traditional Latino music but not too loud for a change.

Other neighbours outdoors working on their yards also enjoying the sunshine. A quick chat about my electric leaf blower from much more than six foot apart. My windows open allowing a soft warm breeze through the house.

I thought why not grab the Z6 and take a few more redundant palm tree photos? Another wonderful day in my little piece of Las Vegas. 🌴🌵🌞

People Are Out and About

Las Vegas is a city of about two million people, many of them are still out and about doing their daily things. My drug store and pharmacy now has signs taped to the floor with blue tape forming a line with a six foot spacing. Why six foot? Overall things seem very much normal around my area of the city which I’m grateful for but let’s keep things in perspective, be safe.

Today is sunny with 82 degrees. 🌴🌞😎

In The Desert

“In the desert you can remember your name ’cause there ain’t no one for to give you no pain”

I love this old song by America, good memories – good years. This set of photos are all rather old and taken both around the city and also in the Valley of Fire State Park as well as the Lake Mead National Recreation Area. I am digging very deep into my archives to pull out photos like this! I can see the difference between the Nikon D3300 and the Nikon Z6 bodies, the image clarity is very much cleaner, sharper these days. I hope you are well and safe!

People Out and About

It’s both nice to see people at the park and not. Should people be doing this? Are they not taking this dangerous situation seriously? I shouldn’t be be out either.

That’s a bit of snow atop 6500+ foot Gass Peak far away.

The World is Still Beautiful…

Today I set out for a few items which I did find, then headed back home for more self-imposed isolation. It was wonderful to get the heck out of the house for a change of scenery! As you can see there are many folks out and about today, in the next set I drove through the park and was amazed at how many folks were out and about today. The world is still beautiful!

If you noticed the banding in my photos recently you’ve got a good eye. This is because I now reduce image sizes way down to around 200kb rather than upload them at more than twice that size which has already saved a ton of storage space in my account. Sorry, I think this sucks as it’s not displaying my amateur photographs as well as I would to see them on this blog.

Clouds Touch The Earth

Here are some old photos from one of my day trips to the little town of Pahrump, Nevada. The quality of these photos isn’t so good both because of yours truly, and the old Nikon D3300 body in my opinion. The mirrorless Nikon Z6 is a vast improvement, thank you, Nikon!

On The Way to Hoover Dam

A couple oldie photos for ya, I’m on the freeway obviously, the other image is a very low Lake Mead water level. The lake hasn’t seen full pond since the 1980’s which totally sucks.

Sun Valley

Also known as Las Vegas Valley of course, I’ve captured these views before but these are processed differently. The views are worth putting up with the traffic and other things.

A Nice View of The Las Vegas Strip

I recorded this video with the iPhone one or two years ago departing Las Vegas for Michigan. The aircraft used a different runway this time that has a fine view of our very expensive Las Vegas Strip. Welcome to Sin City. We then gradually roll right for the northeast hop toward Michigan. This aircraft sounds like an Airbus A319 or A320, beautiful aircraft. I kinda love to fly!

A Moody Sunset

Lovely isn’t it? Gladly today saw zero rain and partly sunny conditions with a nice breeze. T Shirt and shorts weather in Mid March in southern Nevada! 🥰🌴🌵😎

Frond Love

Since I’m staying around the house today, I took some (redundant) photos of my Mexican Fan Palms in the backyard and the Mediterranean Fan Palm out front. The fronds are so green, it’s amazing! It’s now overcast but no rain as yet, probably late today or tonight. 🌴🌵🌞😎

Views Around The House

I apologise for not having something better to upload today but by gosh I just don’t feel like going anywhere today. One of the perks of retired life eh? So I grabbed the Nikon and grabbed some images from the front and back yards. This set is the front yard plus another look toward the end of the street at those beautiful foothills just west of me about four miles. The photo of the distant foothills is highly cropped to protect the privacy of my neighbours… 😎

On Top of The Deck

Here is another photo from yesterday on the top floor of the parking deck. The clouds were still hanging low in the morning, it became sunny later in the day which leads me to say that this morning is gloriously sunny but the NWS says there is a huge batch of rain moving north from California that will bring possible flash flooding to Las Vegas late today and into tomorrow.

And I just cleaned my truck up again dammit! Hey, we need the rain so badly, bring it on. The desert southwest has been in a terrible drought for a very long time now. I wish we could get enough rain to keep Lake Mead at full pond where it hasn’t been since the 1980’s.

A Fresh Skin

You may have noticed that this blog looks a bit different this visit. Well, there’s a good reason for this! Once in a while I will try a different theme or skin for this site. Today I tried this again but as usual wasn’t satisfied with what I found so I tried to reinstall the Opti theme that was in use. I couldn’t find it, dammit! I really liked that theme yet was curious about other themes.

My next move was to have a literal chat with the folks at WordPress.com. After some brief chat with a rep, I was told that the theme I have been using for a good lot of time has now been retired. Retired! I am retired, how the hell can a theme be retired? I was and am still annoyed but there isn’t one damn thing I can do about it.

All of this said, welcome to the new look of Las Vegas Photoblog. Or Photo Blog if you like. I suppose the new look is far less busy in it’s appearance, less complicated. If you like or dislike the theme, please say so! Perhaps this theme is a bit more ‘modern’ looking?

The photo was taken early today before the sun popped out! The clouds are hugging the Summerlin Peaks. I never saw this mountain beauty back home in Michigan… 🌴🌵

Cloud Capped

I snapped these two photos this afternoon, you are looking north to northeast at the Las Vegas Range on the north end of the valley. Gass Peak at 6,943 feet is hidden in those clouds. Beautiful!
